I’m always looking for fun but easy crafts to make with large groups. Scouts, Sunday School or senior clubs are eager to help with projects, but they can’t be overly complicated. Then Christy shared with my Facebook Page this adorable Tic Tac Toe game!

Directions to Make Your Own Tic Tac Toe Game:

She purchased these muslin bags from Amazon. They are 3″ x 4″ with a drawstring. Just perfect to hold the playing pieces. Christy simply painted the grid lines (with acrylic paint) onto the muslin bags. You can do it freehand – or use a ruler and lightly draw first with a pencil. Then with a fine brush cover the pencil lines.

She experimented using a Permanent Marker, but wasn’t fully happy with the results – the ink appeared fairly light and even seemed to skip spots since the muslin bags are not fully smooth. Painting was an easier method for dark clean lines.

HOWEVER – here is an important step: You need to put cardboard, cardstock or thick paper towel in the middle of the bag. Not only does it keep the bag taut BUT more importantly – it prevents the paint from bleeding through to the back! (Sounds like something I would forget to do!)

Christy used glass stones as her markers and for each game she includes 5 glass stones of 2 different colors. You might already have some of them already – I put them in vases as decoration. You can find them at Michaels or even HERE at Amazon.

For another option, my friend Cathy found these tile spacers from Home Depot for the “X” and water bottle tops for the “O”.

These games make up so quickly that in an afternoon Christy had 100 to donate and include in her Operation Christmas Child shoebox gifts.

(You “might” think that you can’t include these glass stones in an Operation Christmas Child shoebox – but you can! They are the same size as a marble – and marbles are absolutely allowed, because they both are fairly indestructible.)

My friends over at Simply Shoe Boxes made a printable instruction sheet to pack with your tic tac toe game – which makes it perfect to include in overseas gifts where some might never have played before. She uses 2 different color Poker Chips as her markers! CLICK HERE for the instructions

Wouldn’t this also be fun to make as birthday favors? Or even as the birthday activity and have the children take them home? Or as a class gift? As a former class mom, I was always looking for easy projects!

Thank you Christy for sharing 🙂

Tic Tac Toe is a reasonably basic version of community card poker and the name will make sense if you are familiar with other variants such as Otis Elevator and Iron Cross. It’s all about the arrangement of the community cards on the table and how players can use them but we shall explain more below.

Tic Tac Toe Poker

Community card poker is a style of play in which the dealer places a number of cards on the table which can be shared by all players. The aim of Tic Tac Toe is to create the strongest five card hand according to standard high poker rankings. A wide variety if Tic Tac Toe rule options means this is usually better suited to home rather than casino play. Blinds or antes can be used.

Tic Tac Toe Rules

To begin with each player receives two hole cards and the dealer places three face-up community cards in a row on the table. There now follows the first betting round during which players can:

  • Fold – discard the card
  • Check – opt not to bet but remain in the hand
  • Call – match the biggest bet placed so far
  • Raise – increase the bet

The dealer now places more community cards on the table in the following order – a lower row of three, then two cards to make up the square, then a final card in the centre. You now have a 3 x 3 grid of community cards. After each grid deal, there’s another round of betting.

Assuming two players remain after the final betting round, the showdown takes place and hands are compared. Those hands must comprise both hole cards plus a row of three cards from the grid in any direction – horizontal, vertical of diagonal, once the Tic Tac Toe moniker.

Variations to this game usually feature more hold cards dealt to the players but their final hands may still only contain two.
